Alumina silicate or Lava is a machinable ceramic material. It has a high use temperature, and excellent thermal/electrical insulating properties.  Unfired Grade "A" Lava is a free machining material that can be shaped using most machine tools.  The material can be fired and densified after machining, but it does expand roughly 2% when fired.
